Pampa de Arrieros “The New Tourist Attraction in Arequipa”, is located 71 kilometers from the city of Arequipa and 280 kilometers from Puno, at an altitude of 3,749 meters above sea level. It is in the jurisdiction of the Yura district, bordering the Tambo Cañahuas peasant community of the Yanahuara district.
The train tracks cross Pampa de Arrieros, it was a very productive town, considered as the gateway to the city of Arequipa in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
The railway passed through the place and was an obligatory stop where the Passengers tasted the best Arequipeño stews before reaching their destination and the engineers took the opportunity to load the train ovens.
Tourist destination
The town remained abandoned for more than two decades until the economic reactivation of the COVID-19 pandemic opened the eyes of the locals. They began to build and maintain the houses and now entire families visit Pampa de Arrieros on weekends, especially on religious holidays.
On June 13, the patron saint San Antonio de Padua is celebrated. La Candelaria on February 2, the Holy Cross on May 2 and the Virgin of Fatima on May 13.
