Continue through the Andes to the tranquil Lagunillas lagoon, a haven for flamingos and other Andean bird species. This adventure is a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and cultural insights

We will pick you up from your hotel at 7:00 a.m. and begin our journey along the old road to Puno. This scenic drive takes us along a rugged dirt path that winds behind the Pichu Pichu volcano, offering spectacular views of the towering and majestic Misti volcano. As we travel, we’ll pass through the charming town of Chiguata, where we’ll make a brief stop to admire and photograph the ancient pre-Incan agricultural terraces, a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage.

After approximately two hours of travel, we’ll arrive at the breathtaking Laguna de Salinas, also known as the Arequipa salt flat. This unique natural wonder undergoes a remarkable transformation: between April and December, the lagoon dries up, revealing a vast, shimmering salt flat surrounded by dramatic volcanoes, some of which are still active. Located within the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, this area is a sanctuary for an incredible variety of flora and fauna. The reserve is home to hardy high-altitude plants like ichu grass and queñua trees, which thrive in the harsh Andean environment. As you explore the salt flat, you’ll have the chance to observe native wildlife such as llamasalpacas, and the graceful vicuñas, whose fine wool is highly prized. The lagoon also attracts vibrant Andean flamingos, whose pink hues create a striking contrast against the white salt flats. Keep an eye out for other bird species, such as Andean geese and Andean gulls, as well as small mammals like vizcachas (a type of chinchilla) that inhabit the surrounding hills.

Next, we’ll continue our adventure through the Andes, where we’ll pause for a relaxing outdoor picnic (not included), surrounded by the awe-inspiring mountain scenery. As we journey through the National Reserve, our next stop will be Lagunillas, a tranquil lagoon situated at an elevation of 4,250 meters above sea level in the Puno region. This picturesque spot is a haven for flamingos and a variety of Andean bird species, including Puna ibisAndean ducks, and plovers. The lagoon’s ecosystem is rich with aquatic plants that provide food and shelter for these birds, creating a vibrant and dynamic environment. The surrounding wetlands are also home to rare plant species adapted to the high-altitude conditions, such as cushion plants and mosses, which play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of this unique habitat.

Finally, we’ll make our way to Puno, where we’ll drop you off at your hotel. Expect to arrive by 5:00 p.m., concluding a day filled with natural wonders, cultural insights, and unforgettable encounters with Peru’s incredible biodiversity.
