Explore the breathtaking depths of the Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest canyons, on our Classic Colca Canyon Trek 2 Days — a well-balanced hiking adventure designed for travelers who want to connect with nature, culture, and authentic Andean life.
This classic trekking route begins at Pampa San Miguel, the main panoramic viewpoint near Cabanaconde. From here, the trail descends dramatically into the canyon along ancient paths used for generations by local communities. As you hike deeper into the valley, you’ll reach San Juan de Chuccho, where you will enjoy a well-deserved traditional lunch surrounded by agricultural and canyon landscapes.
The journey continues toward the lush Sangalle Oasis, a hidden paradise known for its palm trees, warm climate, refreshing swimming pools, and peaceful atmosphere. Here you will spend the night, resting in comfortable lodge accommodations under the stars at the bottom of the canyon.
Throughout the trek, our expert local guides share insights into the geology of Colca Canyon, native flora and fauna, pre-Inca terraces, and the cultural traditions of the region. With more than 15 years of experience, Perou Voyage guarantees a safe, well-organized, and unforgettable hiking experience.
Whether you are an experienced trekker or an active traveler seeking adventure, this 2-day Colca Canyon hike offers the perfect combination of challenge, scenery, and cultural immersion.
Day 1: Arequipa – Colca Valley – Cruz del Cóndor – Pampa San Miguel – San Juan – Sangalle Oasis
Hotel pickup in Arequipa between 3:00 and 3:30 AM.
Your Colca Canyon trekking experience begins with an early departure across the Andean highlands. The scenic drive follows the traditional route through the Colca Valley, offering views of volcanoes, puna grasslands, and grazing alpacas.
We stop for breakfast in either Chivay or Yanque, both traditional towns known for their colonial churches and agricultural heritage.
Stop at Cruz del Cóndor
Before starting the hike, we visit Cruz del Cóndor, the most famous viewpoint in Colca Canyon. This dramatic overlook provides panoramic views into the deepest section of the canyon and is the best location to observe the Andean condor in flight.
This stop adds a complete canyon perspective before you descend into its depths.
Start of the Trek at Pampa San Miguel
We then transfer to Pampa San Miguel, the official starting point of the Classic Colca Canyon 2-Day Trek. From this viewpoint, the hiking trail begins with a steady descent along zigzag paths carved into the canyon walls.
As you descend, you’ll notice:
-
Pre-Inca agricultural terraces still in use today
-
Native cactus species and endemic vegetation
-
Views of the Colca River flowing below
-
Layered volcanic rock formations
The downhill hike takes approximately three hours at a comfortable trekking pace.
Lunch in San Juan de Chuccho
We arrive at San Juan de Chuccho, a small rural village located inside the canyon. Here, you’ll enjoy a traditional homemade lunch prepared by a local family.
This stop allows you to experience authentic Andean hospitality and understand how communities live within the canyon ecosystem.
Trek to Sangalle Oasis
In the afternoon, the hike continues through Cosñirhua and Malata before descending toward Sangalle Oasis, a tropical microclimate at the bottom of Colca Canyon.
Sangalle is known for:
-
Palm trees and warm temperatures
-
Natural swimming pools
-
Relaxed canyon atmosphere
-
Stunning sunset views
After arrival, you’ll have free time to relax and recover from the day’s hike. Dinner is served at the lodge, followed by overnight accommodation in rustic but comfortable bungalows.
Sleeping inside Colca Canyon is a unique experience that very few travelers fully appreciate — this is what makes the 2-day trek truly special.
Day 2: Sangalle – Cabanaconde – Colca Valley – Arequipa
Before sunrise, we begin the ascent from Sangalle back to Cabanaconde. Hiking early avoids the heat and provides dramatic morning light over the canyon walls.
The uphill trek takes approximately three hours and is considered the most physically demanding part of the Colca Canyon hike. However, your guide sets a steady pace and ensures regular breaks.
Reaching the rim of the canyon provides a strong sense of accomplishment — you’ve officially hiked inside one of the world’s deepest canyons.
After breakfast in Cabanaconde, we begin the return journey through the Colca Valley, making scenic stops at traditional villages and panoramic viewpoints.
By late afternoon, we return to Arequipa, completing one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in southern Peru.
