Chachani Volcano in the Andes

Chachani volcano is located in the Andes mountains. This volcano is located in the north of Arequipa, next to the Misti volcano, the second most populous city in Peru.

While Peru has several active volcanoes, Chachani is considered inactive. Evidence of past volcanic activity at this location emerges from the lava domes, stratovolcanoes, and remnant shield volcanoes that dot the landscape.

Chachani is much wider than it is tall, lying about 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) above its surrounding terrain, with a width of about 17,000 meters (55,800 ft). Its slopes remain steep for terrain walkers, as indicated by the faint switchbacks on the mountain’s southeast flank. These trails are used by hikers to start their ascent to the top.

Snowfields are visible near the peaks, but there are currently no glaciers left on this mountain. The region once had extensive glaciers during the last glacial maximum, around 20,000 years ago.
