Archaeological site of Puerto Inca
The archaeological site of Puerto Inca or Quebrada de la Vaca was inhabited between the 13th and 15th centuries by the Incas. It is a point of interest for lovers of history. An area where you can find houses, warehouses and cultivation terraces.
The buildings of Puerto Inca were built with stone and a special mixture made of sand and burnt and ground shells. This union produced a material similar to calcium carbonate, an ingredient used in the manufacture of cement.
Most of the buildings that can be found on the beach of Puerto Inca have a single floor, but only one of them had two floors, the purpose for which it was created in this way being unknown. Most of the walls have straight lines, although there are also some with a certain curvature.
For its part, the underground deposits found in the place have come to draw the attention of archaeologists. These warehouses can be found scattered throughout the territory and resemble a bottle sunk in the sand; small in the mouth and wide at the bottom. These warehouses or “Colcas” have drawn attention because they are quite disproportionate if the population that inhabited the place is taken into account.
The “SECADERO” is another place to visit. This is characterized by presenting 16 constructions; all of them with walls and ceilings made with flat stones; facing a very large fenced yard. It is said that this part was used in order to dry, select and clean the products extracted from the sea and that they were later transferred to Cusco.
Inca Trail and the chasquis
According to archaeologists, the Chasquis or Messengers of the Inca empire left this cove in order to provide fresh fish and shellfish to the ruler of Tahuantinsuyo. It is said that these products could reach Cusco in less than 24 hours due to the speed of the chasquis and the extraordinary road made to communicate all the provinces with the capital of Tahuantinsuyo. Helping in the supply of maritime supplies; and agricultural products from the coast, jungle and mountains. An Inca trail that is still preserved to this day and can be visited on the beach of Puerto Inca.
