Mario Vargas Llosa
Born in Arequipa, a city surrounded by volcanoes and the gateway to the Colca Canyon, one of Peru’s most spectacular natural wonders.
If there is a current personality known beyond the Peruvian borders, it is the writer and Nobel Prize winner, Mario Vargas Llosa. With a Doctor of Philosophy and Letters degree, he is considered one of the most important novelists and essayists in history. But Vargas Llosa has not only dedicated his philosophical knowledge to writing, but also to Peruvian and international politics.
Javier Perez de Cuellar
Peruvian diplomat and former Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) between 1982 and 1991. His work as a mediator on political issues earned him international recognition and he has been the winner of the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation.

Gaston Acurio
The chef Gastón Acurio, with whom our chef Pablo Ortega worked, is undoubtedly another of the Peruvians who places Peru, its cuisine and its gastronomy, at the top. He is the owner of various restaurants around the world and the author of numerous books. He also has his own TV show and collaborates in various media.
Susana Baca
Twice winner of the Latin Grammy, Susana is one of the best representatives of Latin American folklore. She is also responsible for reviving Afro-Peruvian music. She and she is not only a woman with undeniable musical talent, but she was also Minister of Culture of Peru and President of the Inter-American Commission on Culture at the OAS.
Carlos Noriega
Peruvian-born Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Noriega was a NASA astronaut who participated in two space shuttle missions-STS-84 in 1997 and STS 97-in 2000. In fact, he can boast of spending 481 hours in space, including more than 19 hours conducting spacewalks.
“The cholo” Sotil
The world of soccer also has a Peruvian ambassador: “El cholo” Sotil. His real name is Hugo Sotil Yerén, and he is considered one of the best soccer players in the history of Peru.
He was part of the Peruvian National Team that won the 1975 Copa América and reached the quarterfinals in the World Cups in Mexico ’70 and Argentina ’78. His fame grew when he signed for FC Barcelona, where he wore the number 10 shirt. In fact, he was the teammate of the great Cruyff.
Mariano Melgar
He was a renowned Peruvian poet and precursor of Romanticism in America. His famous poems, called yaravíes, have been recognized worldwide for their metrics and intonation. In addition to his artistic side, Melgar also had a strong patriotic feeling and love for Peru. He took an active role in the fight for independence by participating in the Battle of Umachiri. The poet of the Yaravíes managed to resist bravely, but was finally captured and shot at the age of 24.
Melgar, another Arequipeño icon, grew up near the Andes landscapes that today travelers can explore on a Colca Canyon day tour.
