In many parts of Peru the streets are filled with partying, color and tradition for the Carnival celebrations, thus being a great season to travel and learn more about our customs.
Cajamarca’s Carnival:
It is the most famous carnival in Peru. It began in 1930 and is one of the most important festivities in the region that is characterized by lively dances and colorful costumes.
Loreto Carnival:
According to the beliefs of the ancient settlers, this is the time when evil spirits are on the loose, and that explains the use of clothing inspired by these demons during the celebration, which is also very colorful and invites visitors or residents to play with water and mud of different shades of colors.
Riojan Carnival:
This carnival is celebrated in the San Martín region and its central day is February 25. In this festivity, the Riojan devils are represented by men disguised with masks that imitate funny and burlesque movements of animals from the Amazon forest, such as the monkey, the otorongo or domestic animals, such as the dog or the horse.
Ayacuchano Carnival:
This carnival is part of our Cultural Heritage. It is one of the most authentic cultural festivities that the population preserves, as it expresses the creativity and sensitivity of the people through urban and rural troupes.
Juliaca Carnival:
This is a great folk festival in our Puno region, known as the longest and most lavish carnival in Peru.
It begins with the celebration of the Q’ashwa of San Sebastián, on January 20, continues with Ash Wednesday, entrance and burning of the Ñol Carnavalón, the homage to Pachamama, the tutelary apus, and the incense and beautification of the houses with flowers, snakes, balloons and mixtures.
In this carnival, artistic manifestations are held such as dance competitions, where the Morenadas, Caporales, Tobas and T’inkus stand out, all of them accompanied by costumes and masks inspired by the cultures of the highlands with colorful and very showy costumes.
The contests bring together adult and young dancers and visitors.
