The Arequipa Food Tour takes you to discover the delicious food in Arequipa city, which is a very popular gastronomic destination due to the "picanterias".
The "picanterías" in Arequipa date back to the 16th century, becoming famous at first for Chicha de Jora, a traditional corn-based drink, and later for the preparation of exquisite Andean and Hispanic fusion dishes.
The city of Arequipa has a spectacular gastronomy and culinary history, and if you are visiting this fantastic city, you cannot miss exploring the famous "picanterías",
Pick up at 10AM from the hotel and departure to Mercado San Camilo, the main market in Arequipa, declared Monumental Historical Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. We'll walk along San Camilo for watching and taste typical local fruits and for learning more about local products.
Then we will continue by car to a "picanteria", where We will start by exploring the local cuisine, to learn about its history. In this place, we will learn the process of making the famous "Chicha de Jora", a fermented drink that dates back to the Inca times.
Also, we will taste various typical entrees of Arequipa, which vary according to the day, among them "Torrejitas de Verduras", "Escribano" which is a type of salad with rocoto and the famous "Ocopa Arequipeña".
Afterwards we will go by car to another picanteria, where we will taste the delicious and traditional “Americano” dish, which consists of portions of various dishes such as “Soltero de queso”, “Estofado de res”, “Pastel de Tallarín”, "locro de pecho", “Ají de calabaza”, accompanied with rice.
We cannot finish a gastronomic tour without stopping to try an exquisite dessert. On this occasion we will try the creamy "Queso Helado", made by hand.
After this delicious experience, we will return to the hotel.
