Lake Mucurca is located at 4350 MASL, in Peru in the Arequipa Region, in Caylloma province at Cabanaconde district, It is surrounded by mountains, and volcanoes such as Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya and Ampato, in the Arequipa region. It lies west of the Sabancaya volcanoe. The lake is about 5.8 km long and 1.57 km at its widest point, this is an excellent place for watching Andean wildlife.

To get to the lagoon, you must travel from the town by car for two hours along an unpaved road. From Mucurca It takes 2 days to reach the summit of Ampato, the lagoon surprises with parihuanas, Huallatas, ducks, seagulls and ajoyas. There are also many wild birds, highlighting the goldfinches and sparrows, along the entire way we can see the vizcachas and partridges. Throughout the shore of the Lagoon you can see ranches dedicated to grazing and caring for cattle and cattle.

Day 1: Arequipa – Chivay – Cabanaconde

Pick up at 6AM from your hotel in Arequipa and travel by tourist transportation to Chivay, the capital of the Colca Canyon region.

Along the way we’ll stop at the national reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, at this point we will watch: vicugnas, lamas and alpagas.

Then we will continue, until arrive to Patahuasi, where we will enjoy a cup of coca tea which is helpful for the altitude sickness.

Afterwards, we will arrive to the wetlands of Tocrapampa, at this point wqe will watch the typical birds. Arrive to the highest point Patapampa, a natural view point, from where we can watch the south moutain range.

Arrive to Chivay for having lunch, after lunch we will continue to Cabanaconde. On the way we will stop in some view points, for watching andean terraces and the beautiful Colca Canyon views. Arrive to Cabanaconde and overnight in Kuntur Wassi.

Day 2: Cabanaconde - Mucurca - Cabanaconde

Breakfast early in the morning in the hotel and departure to the Mucurca lagoon by car.  The road to the lake takes around one hour and thirty minutes.

From Mucurca, we will get the best views from the Sabancaya, Hualca Hualca and Ampato volcanoes and of course we will be able to watch the andean birds and the local fauna. After  taking pictures and  walking around the lake, we will be ready to come back to Cabanaconde town.
